FEP48 Soul Purpose and the Divine Feminine with Sara Artemisia

Show Notes:

This month we are joined by Sara Artemisia — a Flower Essence Practitioner, Plant Spirit Wisdom Teacher, and host of the Plant Spirit Podcast and the Plant Spirit Herbalism Summit.

Our discussion is a rich exploration of soul purpose and the re-emergence of the divine feminine, with deep wisdom and powerful activation by the Wild Roses and Queen Anne’s Lace.

Honoring the wisdom embedded in traditional fairy tales, we delve into the symbolism of Sleeping Beauty/Briar Rose and how it relates to the modern day awakening of divine feminine consciousness.

We talk about the journey of finding our purpose as not being a single act but rather a series of intuitive steps on our life path, and learning to trust the guidance all around us with help from the plants and flower essences.

[00:00:18]
Today, we are joined with Sara Artemisia, our friend and colleague. We are going to be talking about plant spirit consciousness, how it relates to our intuitive development and soul purpose. And we’re really hoping to have probably what’s likely to be a wide-ranging conversation and really responding to the moment where we’re inhabiting right now. So welcome, Sara. She is a flower essence practitioner, plant spirit wisdom teacher, and the host of The Plant Spirit Podcast. Sara helps wellness professionals and empaths clear their inner blocks and clarify their life purpose by working in collaboration with plants and the conscious wisdom of nature. Having always felt connected to nature and the sacred foundation of life, she’s also been coaching individuals to move through obstacles for over 14 years. She deeply loves the land and place where she lives, which is the traditional ancestral homelands of the Tacoma and Shasta people in southern Oregon. Welcome, Sara. It’s good to have you.

Sara Artemisia: [00:01:48] Thank you so much. So wonderful to be here with you both.

Rochana Felde: [00:01:51] Yeah, and it’s great to have you on after both Kathleen and I were guests on your Plant Spirit Herbalism summit, and then you were a guest speaker on our Flower Essence Conference. And so, it’s great how it all comes around like this, and to have met you through those processes and now just to be able to chat about whatever we want.

Sara Artemisia: [00:02:13] It’s so great, yeah, to just continue the conversation. I love it. It’s an endless conversation with the plants, so it’s wonderful to be here again.

Kathleen Aspenns: [00:02:20] Yeah. And it’s an organic process, right? We’re always learning and we’re always responding in the moment of whatever the plants are talking to us and sharing with us. Maybe start off, because perhaps on the podcast our listeners may not know you as well, it’d be nice to hear maybe your origin story if you’d be so kind as to share.

Sara Artemisia: [00:02:46] Oh, I love that question. Well, the plant origin story, honestly, I feel like I’ve been connected to plants my entire life. I was raised by hippie parents, and so I didn’t actually know until I started going to elementary school that not everyone was using healing salve and drinking tinctures and using Rescue Remedy and things like that from a very young age. So the plants have always been a part of the journey.

And as I moved into adulthood, I started to really connect with the plant spirits so deeply for years. And then it got to a point where I realized that I needed to deepen in my relationship with the plants, both spiritually and physically, and start to bring that forward into the world more. And so it has definitely been a huge, huge journey with the plants and I am so grateful for their guidance and support and I feel them so present every single day. And it has been an incredible journey of evolution with them that I feel will continue for the rest of my life.

And the thing that I absolutely love so deeply about working with the plants is that I feel that there’s this open channel of communication where I receive guidance from them on a regular basis. And so there’s this sense of understanding that, whereas before I started working with the plants in this conscious, open way, I felt like I needed to have things all figured out, like I needed to have my life mapped out, or what’s the plan, and what are the steps to get there, the exact trajectory kind of a thing. And since working with the plants, my experience has been much more of, they are providing this guidance of healing, loving, alignment, really being in my center as I step forward in this life and that I don’t need to know what’s five steps ahead, that if I’m just tuned in, tuned in to the inner self, tuned into what’s happening in this moment and listening deeply to what their guidance is, that I will be steered in the right direction. And so this is why this has become my life work. Absolutely.

Rochana Felde: [00:04:56] Yeah. There’s a couple of pieces that you were saying, and I was like, yes, yes, exactly, that’s it. And I think that one of the reasons why we connect so well is just that being on that plant path and having that strong calling and probably most of our listeners as well, having that calling to be on the path.

And when we talk about our purpose, and I’ve been thinking about it a little bit, like our soul purpose, how did we get here, right? And for me, I know it never came in as– I mean, it was never obvious. It was like that. It was like one step led to the next step, led to the next step. And the more I did that and the more I listened and paid attention to the signs and what nature was telling me that brought me to all of these places, that then it became clear, this is what I am meant to be doing here. So I don’t know if– it sounds like it’s like that for you as well. And so thinking about what are the plants that helped us, are there plants that helped us do that along the way? I’d love to explore, are there flower essences or plant energies that maybe opened the door even more for you in that path?

Sara Artemisia: [00:06:16] Oh, yeah, 100%. I love that question. And honestly, working with flower essences period opened up that door of connection and deepening and understanding about who am I, what am I really doing here, in such a huge way. And this is largely due, I feel, to the fact that I am a very sensitive, empathic person. And so, with the flower essences, what I feel that they help with is, both helping to clarify what is my energy, what is mine, what is happening in this energy field of this self right here, right now, and what is not, like what is maybe, say, for example, messages of society, or the chaos that’s happening on a daily basis in the world. So, that has been really helpful.

And the other thing that I love about the flower essences that I feel is so clarifying is that I feel when I work with certain flower essences that they essentially straighten out channels of light in my body. And through that, I’m able to receive information in a more clear way. There’s so much clarity that happens as a result. There’s so many plants, but ones that are coming to mind that have been hugely instrumental for me in guiding my path have been Bay Laurel, Cedar, Redwood, Oak, Motherwort, Dandelion, and Rose. That’s a lot. But definitely, Rose continues to come back up again and again and again. And my sense with this– because I wasn’t always a Rose person for decades actually, from childhood until my early thirties. I would say I was a green plants person because I was so much more interested in this aspect of the underdogs of life. I grew up Quaker, so being involved in social justice has always been a part of my worldview, my schema for understanding the world and reality. And so even in the plant realm, I was like, well, what about the green ones? Like, no one appreciates the green ones. And of course, everyone loves Rose and Dahlia and all these beautiful, showy ones, but what about the green ones? And it wasn’t actually until I moved to this house where the woman who lived here before us planted tons of roses all over the yard, that I really started to develop a very deep relationship with Rose and understanding how she is very multidimensional in her healing gifts. And there are so many layers to her, her healing guidance and support, and also, I feel that she is a master teacher plant for this time. And what I mean by that is that, and I’m sure many of you listening are tuned into this in your own way as well, how we’re going through a massive transformation on the planet right now. Massive. It’s huge. Sometimes it can feel– sometimes it can feel like we are dawning into a new day. Other times it can feel like it’s darkest just before the dawn, which certain things can happen culturally, where right now we’re definitely in that kind of time where it’s like, wow, it’s darkest before the dawn. Like, sometimes we just really go into that dark space culturally. I’ve also seen it as this experience of moving through a birth canal right now, and that is not comfortable. Being born is not comfortable. You’re going through a really small space. It’s compacted, it’s compressed, it’s very uncomfortable. And then you emerge into this new space. And I feel that Rose is really helping us planetarily to move into this. She’s helping to guide and usher and steward us into this new space that ultimately, I feel, will be really incredible. And right now, it’s like, we’re going through some uncomfortable times.

So Rose, in my experience, she’s both planetarily helping us in this overarching way, and she’s also a very close personal ally as well that I feel very connected to.

And of course, I have to mention Mugwort. Mugwort is just so infused, particularly Artemisia Douglasiana. The Mugwort that grows around here is so infused into the very core essence of my being that I sometimes forget to mention her because there’s this feeling of, we are one. So, yeah.

And it’s interesting though with Rose to just notice how she’ll come up. There’ll be these periods where she’ll just be emerging in a much more present way. In the past three days, that has been super present. Made a Wild Rose essence just a couple of days ago, and it’s just been incredible to feel presence so at the forefront right now.

Kathleen Aspenns: [00:10:59] For me, the thing that so many people who maybe haven’t lived with Roses or experienced Wild Roses, because it has been in the modern era of modern Rose breeding, particularly, the previous century, they were hybridized into essentially heads without bodies. They were bred to be for the show bench. Hybrid Tea Roses, they became so popular in the ’50s and were bred into being. And so now most gardeners and most people– well, maybe not, maybe it’s changing a little bit, but so many people think of Roses and they think of basically kind of this thing that sort of carries the flower, right? And its only job is just to sort of run up a long stalk and carry a flower on top as big and whatever is possible. And for me, this is kind of like this whole extension of the human experience, which is the over-intellectualization of life where basically the only thing we care about is from the chin up, and it’s not a lived experience, right? And those Roses require a lot of inputs. They required a lot of fungicides and chemical sprays and all that. And it diverged so far from who the Rose is in her wild form. So, I think there’s something to be said in the parallels in humanity where we’ve realized that, oh, we have bodies, we have to take care of our bodies. We have to take care of the microbiota of our bodies. We are important in our lower selves to carry our consciousness along into life. So, I think that’s a long way around of saying, the Wild Roses have something really important to offer that’s beyond just the experience of the flower and the fragrance. They have roots and stems and thorns.
